Baby Point Crescent:
This above-the-garage addition was built to provide the homeowners with additional space by expanding the master bedroom into a luxurious master suite including a master bedroom, ensuite bathroom, walk-in closet, and exercise room. While gaining space was the primary objective for this project, preserving the original aesthetic of the home was also an important requirement to create a space that honoured the history of the property and neighbourhood.
The art of the seamless above-the-garage addition
The layout for the exterior was carefully designed to ensure that the wood Tudor and stucco details of the original home were architecturally correct front and back. Special attention to roof lines during framing and shingle selection ensured the addition would look as if it was always a part of the house. Specifications such as the wood species, edging and paint colours were especially important for this addition as getting these details right was essential to seamlessly blend the addition with the existing architecture of the house.
The back of the house at ground level was designed to be simple, clean, and bright. The garden savvy homeowners wanted a utility area to plan and maintain their urban ravine garden. Largely unused before the addition, this area was developed as a garden shed with storage that eliminated the need to build a separate outbuilding for this extremely important feature of the home.
Living in your house during a renovation may be possible with careful planning and a commitment to boundaries.
For this above-the-garage addition, we were able to devise a strategy to isolate all work from the living area. To prevent disruption, a temporary stair was constructed outside the garage to give our crews access to the space during construction. Temporary walls were built and tarps installed to shelter new construction from the elements, mitigate dust, and prevent damage to other areas of the home. This also allowed the crew to work at their own pace and schedule while respecting the homeowners’ space and privacy.
Balancing interior details is critically important for
above-the-garage additions to create a consistent flow and look.
The interior of the space was also designed to appear as though it was always a part of the original build, blending seamlessly with previous renovations completed over the years.
Careful attention was paid to features such as matching hardwood flooring, baseboards, crown moulding and finishing details. Custom made doors were also installed to ensure consistency from room to room.
Upgrades like luxury shower accessories, body jets, intricate marble tile design, and a custom walk-in closet gave the space a luxurious feel second to none.
High-end finishes, custom cabinetry, and luxury accessories are well worth the investment, especially if you plan to stay in the home for the long run.
